STORRS - Freshman guard Andra Espinoza-Hunter has decided to transfer from the University of Connecticut women’s basketball program, as announced by head coach Geno Auriemma on Friday.
“I have enjoyed getting to know Andy and her family,” Auriemma said. “Everyone at UConn wishes Andy all the best as she continues her college career elsewhere.”
The Ossining, N.Y. native averaged 2.0 points and 7.0 minutes over seven games for UConn this season.
Espinoza-Hunter had not been with the team since the end of her first academic semester last month. Auriemma said at the time she went home to deal with some personal issues.
The high school standout was named 2017 New York Gatorade Player of the Year and Co-Miss New York State Basketball, along with being a finalist for the Gatorade National Player of the Year Award.
She was a member of the 2015 U-16 United States national team and averaged 10.0 points and 3.8 rebounds as Team USA went 4-1 and won a bronze medal at the FIBA Americas Championship. She was also a candidate for the 2016 U-17 United States national team.
