NEW BRITAIN - In its first season as a part of the CRAL, the Goodwin Tech girls soccer team will play for a championship.
After temporarily moving from the CTC for the 2020 season due to regionalized schedules, the Gladiators finished the regular season with three straight wins before routing Capital Prep 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon to advance to the tournament championship on Friday.
Senior Asia Vibert shined for Goodwin Tech with a hat trick, while Jillian Yezierski, Desaraya Trusty and Tamoya Bennett all found the back of the net as well. Diamond Marti and Angelina Cirigliano picked up assists in the winning effort, while Arianna White made two saves in net.
The Gladiators will travel to Wilcox Tech on Friday afternoon for the title game, scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Goodwin Tech lost 3-1 in the previous meeting in the opening game of the season.
Southington 3, Bristol Eastern 1: The Blue Knights remained perfect on the season and will now play in the CCC Region B championship game after a big second half on Tuesday.
Both teams battled to a 1-1 tie at the half, with Southington starting the scoring behind a through ball from Allison Carr to Shannon Litchfield, who scored in the 14th minute to put the Blue Knights ahead. The Rams tied it with less than a minute left in the half, when Lili Morneault forced a turnover in the attacking zone and chipped a shot over goalie Emily Eigo to tie the game at the half.
Southington went on the attack in the second half and finally broke through on its third corner kick of the half, when pressure from Carr off a Maya Wroblewski boot led to the Lancers deflecting the ball into their own net to put the Blue Knights in front. Two minutes later, Carr padded the lead when she buried a rebound to seal the game in the 54th minute.
Southington peppered Central goalkeeper Grace D’Amato with 28 shots and 11 on goal, and D’Amato finished the day with nine saves.
The Blue Knights will play the winner of Farmington and Lewis Mills for the championship.
Farmington 2, Bristol Eastern 1: The Lancers came up just short against undefeated Farmington 2-1 in Tuesday’s Region B tournament game, setting up another rivalry chapter in the consolation match.
With the loss, Eastern will now play Bristol Central, which lost to Plainville on Tuesday, to close out the season. The Rams beat the Lancers back on Saturday to conclude the regular season.
Logan Brennan scored a pair of first-half goals for Farmington, while Eastern’s goal came from Connor Policarpio, who scored off a feed from Dom Ferniak.
"Farmington moved the ball well, but we battled throughout," Eastern head coach Bill Sweet said. "We had strong efforts across the board and pressed until the end."
