SOUTHINGTON ‚Äď Southington Town Manager Mark Sciota says it will be ‚Äúimpossible‚ÄĚ to fill the shoes of ‚Äúvisionary‚ÄĚ developer Mat Florian of Florian Properties.
Florian died July 22 at 60 years old. Sciota said that he had ‚Äúthe honor of knowing him for many years.‚ÄĚ
‚ÄúHe was a true Southington gentleman,‚ÄĚ said Sciota. ‚ÄúI worked with him for many years through the town and Planning and Zoning. I never had a bad experience with him; he was always upfront with you. On both a personal level and as a town leader I will miss him.‚ÄĚ
Some of the properties that Florian developed over the years include 98 Main St., where Flair restaurant is now located, 1 Center St. and the former Beecher Street School. He also developed several properties on North Main Street.
‚ÄúHe was a true visionary,‚ÄĚ said Sciota. ‚ÄúOver the last 20 years he took vacant buildings that you and I would look at and say ‚Äėthis needs to come down‚Äô and said ‚ÄėI can do wonders with this.‚Äô And, then he would do it.‚ÄĚ
Sciota said that Florian was one of many business owners who helped the town to thrive over the years.
The son of Mat Florian, also named Mat Florian, said that knowing that their father’s legacy will be remembered is comforting the family in their time of grief.
‚ÄúWe will continue to remind each other of how his impact on this world will be lasting,‚ÄĚ he said. ‚ÄúThe world is different without him, we are different without him, but we are all better for having had him in our lives."
