SOUTHINGTON - A Wallingford woman accused of assaulting her supervisor at a local elementary school in 2016 is headed to trial.
Melinda Fisher, 31, turned down a plea deal offered by state prosecutors during a hearing Wednesday in Bristol Superior Court. The terms of the deal were not put on the record.
Fisher’s attorney, Peter Matthews, was granted a continuance until Feb. 21. That hearing will take place in New Britain Superior Court, where Bristol trials are held.
Fisher, who is free on a $1,500 non-surety bond, is facing charges of first-degree assault and attempted first-degree assault.
According to police, Fisher was involved in an altercation at South End Elementary School, at 10 Maxwell Noble Drive, around 8:34 a.m. on April 21, 2016. Fisher, a district-wide technology assistant, allegedly argued with her supervisor after she addressed Fisher about arriving late for work, police said.
Fisher then allegedly punched the victim in the face, tried to throw another punch and threw a cup of coffee at her as she tried to run away, according to police. After the supervisor fell to the ground, police said, Fisher was seen trying to bang the woman’s head against a wall. She also kicked the woman, according to police.
The fight was broken up by staff members and a parent, who had been dropping off a student, when they finally pulled Fisher away, according to police. After the incident, the supervisor complained of head, face and back pain, and was taken to the Hospital of Central Connecticut's Bradley Memorial campus for medical treatment.
The victim has previously spoken in court, saying the injuries she sustained were serious. After state prosecutors acquired copies of her medical records, the charges against Fisher were enhanced.
Court officials have previously said Fisher was suspended by the school system after the assault. Throughout the case, the Southington Superintendent’s Office has declined to comment on the matter, citing personnel reasons.
