BRISTOL - Firehouse Subs in Bristol, along with other locations around the country, have collected donations to provide life saving equipment to schools and first responders.
The Bristol location is part of the Firehouse Subs chain founded by two, lifelong firefighter who still own the chain, explained Jeff Finnerty, owner of the Bristol Firehouse Subs.
The chain collected almost $2 million in donations for its Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation that was founded in 2005 and aims to buy life-saving equipment for first responders around the country, Finnerty said. Those donations will be distributed as grants to 105 schools, and fire and police departments for life saving equipment, he added.
The Bristol location collected $4,500 for the foundation since it opened on Dec. 11, 2017, and donations are still being collected, according to Finnerty. Two of those grants will be used for life-saving equipment for first responders in Connecticut, he said.
The Hartford Fire Department will receive one of the grants that will provide six automated external defibrillators valued at $13,562.72 each, he said.
The other will be given to the American Red Cross Connecticut Chapter for 2,272 smoke alarms, valued at $24,992 that will be installed in Connecticut homes in at risk communities, he said. The goal of these new alarms is to reduce the number of home deaths and injuries caused by house fires by 25 percent, by then end of 2019.
The foundation has provided over $30 million of life saving equipment to first responders since it began in 2005, Finnerty said.
The Bristol branch collected the donations through various fundraising efforts that have expanded since the foundation began, he added. “It started with a canister near register, and then since then it has evolved,” he said.
One way that collecting donations has evolved is that locations started asking customer to round up their purchase to the next dollar, he explained. Another way is selling the five-gallon drums with the foundation’s logo that are used for the chain’s pickles, he noted.
