Black Friday deals draw shoppers to area stores

BRISTOL - The holiday this week quickly turned from baked turkeys, stuffing and mashed potatoes to Black Friday deals on big screen TVs, toys and clothing.

Tina and Gianna Mennone, mother and daughter, had barely let their Thanksgiving feast start to digest before they attacked the slew of sales at Target and Walmart Thursday evening. The two were looking to buy things for a new home Gianna recently purchased.

By morning, the two were back on the shopping hunt, this time at Kohl’s in Plainville.

“We did a lot of damage today,” Tina Mennone joked. “We got a lot done.”

Surprisingly, the mother-daughter duo said, retailers seemed busier Friday morning and into the afternoon than they did Thursday night - despite the recent trend of Black Friday sales seemingly getting earlier and earlier each year.

“It’s chaos today,” Tina Mennone said. “It wasn’t too busy last night.”

“We waited 30 minutes in line,” her daughter remarked, as the two loaded up their car trunk with new dish sets and other household items.

Kohl’s on Friday was the last stop for the Mennones, as they admittedly had no more room left in their trunk to buy anything else.

Throughout the day, a steady flow of shoppers could be seen at retailers like Walmart, Ocean State Job Lot, Kohl’s and other popular shopping destinations in the area.

Steve and Rose Marie Audi also hit Kohl’s on Friday, picking up things like clothing and pajamas for Christmas gifts this year.

“A little bit of everything,” Rose Marie Audi said. “We got Christmas gifts for our grandchildren and our kids.”

Steve Audi said he and his wife aren’t habitual Black Friday shoppers, but they will seek a bargain from time-to-time.

“Once in a while,” he said, “but not really. We found a little bit of deals today.”
