NEWINGTON – The top-seeded Newington girls basketball team is headed to the quarterfinals of the Class L state tournament after dispatching 16th-seeded Bristol Central 68-31.

The Nor’easters came off a first-round bye and took a 20-point lead into halftime as they shut down all Central players besides Lillian Sirois, who closed her high school basketball career tied with Newington’s Lilly Ferguson as the game’s leading scorer (17 points). The rest of the Rams combined for 14 points in the contest while Bela Cucuta (12), Selah Prignano (11) and Karissa Zocco (nine) all found consistent scoring for Newington.

Ferguson also finished with eight rebounds and was one of three players on her team to grab at least five, along with Prignano and Kendall Miller.

The Nor’easters will host ninth-seeded Guilford in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. on March 8.
