Diamond standouts from Bristol’s two public high schools share “Athlete of the Week” honors for area scholastic sports.

They are sophomore softball player Taylor Keegan of Bristol Eastern and senior Steve Warkoski of the Bristol Central baseball team.

Keegan, a second baseman and daughter of Kim and Paul Keegan, has been a starter since her freshman year. Her team finished the regular season 14-4.

“She’s been leadoff last year and this year. She’s a sophomore only by grade level,” Eastern coach Scott Redman said. “She plays a ton of softball. She’s a table setter. She’s been consistent all year and is hitting over .500. She doesn’t get a lot of credit, but she’s been doing it all for us.”

In their last regular-season game, the Lancers beat cross-town rival and host Bristol Central last Monday.

“I think it was good for us to beat them for the second time this season,” Keegan said. “We only scored one run in the beginning of the game and later scored twice, so it was good to see we could score late in the game. They played a lot better than they played the last game.”

Last year the Lancers, despite being ranked high in Class LL, lost in the first round. This year Keegan hopes she and her teammates do better.

“I think if we play our best, we can make a good run,” Keegan said. “We just need to limit our errors.”

As far as personal goals this season, she has already done well on two. She wanted to hit .400 and has easily exceeded that, and has cut down on the number of errors from last season. She would like to earn all-conference honors before graduating in 2020.

Keegan began playing softball at age seven in the Bristol Girls Little League Softball and other softball affiliations have included Northeast Middle School and the CT Titans. Her long term goal is to play at the collegiate level.

“I like playing softball, because I love meeting new people,” Keegan said. “I like when I’m playing softball because I can concentrate on that and nothing else.”

In addition to the spring sport, Keegan also plays volleyball for the Lancers as a defensive specialist.

The Bristol Central baseball team, which finished the season 7-13, had to deal with injuries and a young lineup. The Rams lost eight games by two runs or less.

Warkowski, the son of Rebecca and Robert Warkoski, was a bright spot for coach Bunty Ray. He won three games on the mound with an ERA of 1.97, while batting in the .360 range.

“Steven has been a steady player all season for us,” Ray said. “He has pitched, hit and played defense in helping the team any way that he can. His leadership in the game has been a bright spot for a team that has seen a lot of tough games.”

The Rams ended their season with a nine-inning, 12-11 loss to host Platt on Thursday.

“We’re a young team, but throughout the season we acted like much older players,” Warkoski said. “Everyone got a year older and through the season we improved. I’m happy with what I’ve accomplished my four years. I can’t wait to come back [next year when in college] and see the younger players growing into what they’ll be.”

Although his high school career is over, Warkoski walks away with a lot of experience to use in the coming years.

“I feel since Little League I gained a sense of leadership and I can use that not only in baseball, but in whatever becomes my career,” Warkoski said. “I have guys from Little League and baseball that I will talk with [and will stay close to] the rest of my life.”

Before he goes to WCSU to play baseball and study digital interactive media art, Warkoski will seen this summer as a member of the Bristol American Legion baseball team. His uncle, Jerry LaPenta, is the manager.

“Last year I played on the junior team and this year I’ll be on the senior team,” Warkoski said. “I’m looking forward to playing with the older guys and that will help me at the next level.”
