NEW BRITAIN - Enjoy an evening of authentic Puerto Rican food, drink and music while raising money for the survivors of Hurricane Maria at Hole in the Wall Theater tonight.
“It’s a chance to bring the community together, and combine our efforts to support a pressing cause,” said showcase liaison at Hole in the Wall Matthew Horowitz. “So many of my friends and neighbors have family on the island who are missing or endangered. I felt we had to use the resources available to us to address that sense of isolation and hopelessness.”
The event - ¡Puerto Rico Se Levanta! - will have food provided by Mofongo, alcoholic beverages by Bloomfield Discount Liquors, and a silent auction with items donated by local organizations and individuals.
Money raised will be donated to “Unidos,” a hurricane relief fund managed by the Hispanic Federation.
¡Puerto Rico Se Levanta! will begin at 7 p.m. at the theater at 116 Main St. Admission is $20 for advance tickets, and $25 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at hitw.tix.com or by calling 860-229-3049.
“The Puerto Rican people have always exemplified what is at the heart of humanity: In times of crisis, differences that normally divide become irrelevant in the face of survival,” said Gladynell Horn, founder of the cosplay modeling agency Pinups & Play, which is staffing and helping to organize the event.
“Both Puerto Ricans and our allies on the mainland want those affected by Hurricane Maria know that Borinquen is more than an island; it is a place in our hearts and their suffering is our own.”
