Restaurants teaming up to help Puerto Rico

More than 40 restaurants in Connecticut are teaming up to raise funds for Puerto Rico as part of the “CT Loves Puerto Rico” campaign.

“The devastation left in Puerto Rico from hurricanes Irma and Maria is undeniable and this campaign was a way for the community to come together and contribute however they can,” organizer for CT Loves Puerto Rick Susan Hosmer said.

For one week beginning on Saturday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 28, participating restaurants will serve food and drinks inspired by the island. All of the proceeds generated by those dishes will be donated to Puerto Rico relief.

CT Loves Puerto Rico is the second market to launch for the fundraising campaign. LA Loves Puerto Rico launched on Saturday, Oct. 7-14, with more than 90 restaurants and bars across the city of Los Angeles participating.

Hosmer said a former colleague and friend of hers started the campaign in Los Angeles and had asked her for help with restaurant recruitment and public relations because she used to live there.

“I was inspired watching it all come together in less than two weeks and thought this needs to be replicated in other places,” she said.

Since Connecticut is her place of residence the obvious answer was to bring it here. Hosmer reached out to the founders of Eat IN Connecticut - a marketing and social media influencer group - to partner up with her to get restaurants on board.

Nearby restaurants include Rooster and Co. in Newington and Seoul BBQ in New Britain.

If people prefer to eat-in, rather than go out, the website and app delivery service Dine-In Connecticut will be donating 100 percent of all delivery fees when customers order the special dish inspired by Puerto Rico at their partner restaurants.

Proceeds will go to Unidos Por Puerto Rico (United for Puerto Rico), a collaborative organization launched by First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Rossello to provide aid and support to those affected by the hurricanes passage.
