PLAINVILLE - The Plainville Wind Ensemble will celebrate its 30th anniversary in Buffalo, N.Y., as part of the Association of Concert Bands’ convention.
Kathleen Marsan of the wind ensemble made the announcement to the Town Council during public comment last Monday and received applause from the room.
The convention will be held from May 2 through 6. The Plainville Wind Ensemble will perform May 5 and one of their pieces will be conducted by international prize winning composer Scott Perkins, who is a Bristol native and graduate of Bristol Central High School.
Perkins will also compose an original piece for the ensemble to perform. Additionally, bassoonist Jane Bate with the ensemble will perform an original piece written in memory of the Petit family after the 2007 murders titled “Hymn to the Beauty that was.”
“Jane told that she cold called him (Rep. Bill Petit) one day to tell him about it and then they ultimately rode up together to see her piece performed by the Hartt Wind Ensemble,” said Ken Bagley, who directs the Plainville Wind Ensemble.
Bagley said the ensemble was accepted as one of seven bands to perform at the event from among 200 applicants from seven states. As part of the convention, the ensemble will also be doing a workshop with composer Robert W. Smith.
“We were very fortunate to be selected; it’s so exciting getting to do this,” said Bagley. “The Plainville Wind Ensemble has come a long way over the years.”
The ensemble was founded in 1987 as the Plainville Community Band. At the time, the group was composed of 14 members from cities and towns in Connecticut. Now, there are more than 75 members.
The Plainville Wind Ensemble will be scheduling several fundraisers this year to help defray the cost of transporting the band and its instruments to Buffalo. These events will be announced at a later time. Donations will also be accepted.
